Review of Melinda and Melinda (2004) by Anne-Catherine D — 09 Jul 2011
I enjoyed this film more on second viewing than at the cinema, but still have a few niggles about it. I love the concept - although don't think the comedy side of the story is one of Woody's funniest; it's also pretty tragic in it's own way too.
Maybe that's part of the point?! My other niggle is that the "tragic" Melinda is just too messed up to be likeable - I really just want her to throw herself off the top of the building. Overall though there are still lots of good moments.
Incidentally, I watched this with a friend who isn't a Woody fan, but is up for watching his films as he doesn't know them and he really enjoyed this film. This is reassuring - as so many of his 90s and 00s films are unfairly compared to his 70s and 80s work, when they need to be enjoyed on their own merits.
Here is an example of a film that a non-fan really loved. I feel slightly vindicated, therefore! lol I think a lot of people would love a lot of his later work if they actually saw it and didn't let reviewers and critics put them off.
