Review of Melancholia (2011) by Hannah M — 16 Jan 2013
Not a perfect film, but it is still one of the best of 2011. I think it's the best representation of chronic depression ever put on the screen. Von Trier's epic tale of destruction will leave you tranfixed.
The imagery is second-to-none and Dunst's performance is flawless. It's hard to love this film, but I tend to think Von Trier never wants us to ever truly love his films completely. He wants us to instead be awestruck and appreciative.
Melancholia certainly works at doing that.
