Review of Melancholia (2011) by Sylvester K — 01 May 2013
Melancholia is a film about depression and the meaning of life, disguised in the form of a disaster film. The story is about a woman, Justine, who is mysteriously connected to the rogue planet which is heading towards earth.
She became severely depressed after the failure of her wedding, then she went on to live with her sister. Her sister is scared of the news that the end of the world is coming; together they share the last few days.
The storyline itself was great, it really helps you understand what a depressed person is going through as the title has suggested. Kirsten Dunst really showed us what a mature actress she has become, Charlotte Gainsbourg in the supporting role also had a stunning performance.
Melancholia is a typical Lars von Trier film, filled with beautiful imagery and lots of details.
