Review of Melancholia (2011) by Andre R — 26 Jul 2014
Von Trier's observation at the clockworks of depression grips and never loosens. Lars Von Trier allows you to enter his state of mind for a short period of time, and when it's over, you're left in a state of complete ecstasy.
Von Trier creates a world that is gorgeous and grim and fills it with characters that reflect his view of mankind and life itself. Yes it's still filled with that nihilistic Lars Von Trier dialogue we've all come to know and love, but his views on what life is aren't irrelevant, in fact, they're oddly relatable.
Having depression, I at one point was rather nihilistic. So no, this is not a film about the end of the world, it's a film about, quote, "a state of mind" from the words of Von Trier himself, it's also a reflection of what Von Trier's perception of the world is as well as his thoughts regarding mankind and the state it's in.
It's not a positive statement, but it's undeniably thought provoking. Besides the amazing cinematography, and the even more amazing setting, "Melancholia"'s cast gives it their all, specifically Kirsten Dunst.
"Melancholia" is yet another stunning masterpiece from Lars Von Trier, a film that mustn't be missed.
