Review of Megan Is Missing (2011) by Andrew A — 13 Dec 2012
I'm not one to complain about exploitation and disturbing imagery in movies, but Megan Is Missing deserves it. I know it's based on an actual event, but the movie itself is a waste of time. It offers no insight, no payoff, no real moments where it throws us a curveball.
At least the Paranormal Activity movies does that, and I couldn't think the found footage genre could get much worse. The movie has only one REALLY effective moment that chilled my bones, but none of it is really good to watch.
The two main characters are surrounded by people who can't act, most of them playing exceptionally unlikable roles. I kind of suspect this movie was made as a warning over the dangers of the internet, but the kidnapping, human slave, rape, and live burial is just mean spirited and turned me off of it.
I commend the movie, however, for not compromising any part of what it wanted to show us. Movies like this should exist, but that doesn't mean we have to watch them. Equal parts stupid and disgusting.
Watch at your own risk.
