Review of Megan Is Missing (2011) by Julia K — 02 Nov 2012
This is a difficult movie to watch. Twice I reached for the eject button, but by now I know that some movies need to be experienced in their entirety to be fully appreciated.
Megan Is Missing is difficult to watch because it's badly made. The actors are awful, the plot is clunky and the direction is unfocused (the diner scene) and often misfires (the news footage). The first 15 minutes aim for 'Kids' grimness and vileness but misses by a mile.
It's also difficult to watch because of its subject matter, which is child abuse and internet bullying and stalking. This is also the only reason one should watch Megan Is Missing. Unlike many other similar movies Megan doesn't hold anything back.
The world it presents is totally real (never mind the 'based on true events' arguments) whether we are aware of it or not. The last 20 minutes are fairly disturbing and thank God for the bad directing or else I don't think many people would make it through.
On the region 1 release there's a 4 minute statement from Mark Klaas (KlaasKids Foundation) that will break your heart.
A portion of the DVD proceeds will be donated to the aforementioned Foundation.
