Review of Megamind (2010) by Jordan F — 02 Feb 2013
Quick Review:
Megamind, a good idea but with fairly flat surrounding characters and details.
Megamind is the story of a alien who comes to this planet but under the wrong circumstances. He's raised in a prison as a baby and is taught by criminals that being bad is good. There's another alien who comes to this planet but is brought up in a rich and educated family. It's a sort of nurture vs nature story.
Will Ferrell plays Megamind with a list of other name brand actors playing the surrounding characters. I have to say Tina Fey's character as the love interest is SOoooOo boring. No wonder DC decided to break up Louise and Clark up.
The problem of this film is that the main character is not really easy to connect with. I suppose we're supposed to root for Will Ferrell but he's never really starting from zero. I mean he has his best friend "minon" and he has all these robotic pets, toys and super duper lair. He was excluded as a kid but a film like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs did that character so much better.
The film is really really well done animation wise. All the compositions of the images are amazing, Dreamworks should be proud. However the story doesn't have much of an emotional tug to it. The adversary for Megamind is unclear and not well defined. There's pretty much no loveable character in this film.... it's just too bad and a waste of dream works talent.
