Review of Megamind (2010) by Rebecca S — 04 Jul 2013
Part of me is a little indecisive here because I'm giving a perfect score to a film I don't think is perfect but I can't help it cause well to me Megamind is an odd piece of work because of how well it pulls itself off.
I'm a superhero fan and I am open to parody but... a lot of superhero spoofs I've seen sorta leave a rotten taste in mesa's mouth because it always seems a wee bit shallow. They don't always seem to know who or what it is they are spoofing or what even really makes the superhero genre.
I mean yeah who doesn't have fond memories of Mighty Mouse as a cartoon but dear god as a parody it fails, and so many Saturday morning cartoons spoof the genre by just throwing bad jokes and clichés/stereotypes at our face with no rhyme or reason.
They don't get the genre and don't give a dime about it enough to care. Not this time. In fact while very funny it plays it like that in the first 5-6 min. of the film. It comes off as a routine spoof like all before it only to throw the rug out from underneath us once the plot really starts.
This was made by Superman fans for Superman fans and they had a huge knowledge of the tropes that are deconstructed, played straight, and turned inside out and upside down. Each character is of course the obvious Superman cast counterpart but you don't care because they are their own fleshed well rounded character.
They are characters. NOT CARICATURES. In fact this is such a good parody that I don't even consider it one. This is legitimate superhero film that is a comedy. That's... rare... I love it!!! The cast is phenomenal and the visual style and character design is unlike anything I've ever seen.
The animation is so good and doesn't cut any corners and the 3-D is used excellently. I also like it as romantic comedy. This has so much heart to it you forget it's a parody and honestly I think that is what makes it great and the best at what it does.
