Review of Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009) by Jonathan B — 01 Oct 2009
It's a goofy, hilarious mess of a movie that walks the very, very thin line between b-movie awesome and just plain awful. It's lame and funny at the same time for all the wrong reasons. The acting is complete cheeseball and Deborah Gibson is sooo awfully hilarious as a lead, with her exaggerated facial expressions of shock and terror. The dialogue is so clunky and exposition heavy ("You're the retired Navy ex-paleontologist, not me!") that it's hilarious. The CGI and "epic" showdown between the title characters is awful; there's only enough money for a few CGI shots, you could easily tell, and they manipulate the editing of these shots like no other.
It's still really hard for me to decide whether to dislike this movie or like it... the line between b-movie awesome and just awful is really thin, and more than once, this film teeters back and forth over the line. Not enough to make me fully recommend it.
