Review of Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009) by Robert B — 27 Apr 2010
Ever since the inception of film making, there have been movies that have resonated with audiences and became classics. Casablanca, Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, Star Wars, Jaws, Titanic... the list goes on. Movies that defied convention, or showed us something we had never seen before. Movies that left us emotionally drained or filled.
Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus is just such a movie. Like so many classics, this movie was made on a shoe-string budget, driven not be effects or glamour, but by characters and drama. This is the story of two love-struck creatures, frozen solid millions of years ago in an icy tomb. Now it is modern day, and some bumbling humans have unleashed the two lovers into the ocean. With millions of years of passion burning inside them, the two sea creatures begin their dance of seduction. Here and there, they sashay, stopping only to bat away a pesky helicopter or leap a few thousand feet into the air to eat an airplane.
The almost forgotten Debbie Gibson plays the main character, a scientist who finds herself involved in her own torrid love affair. The human coupling pales in comparison, however, to the passion seen beneath the waves. When these loving creatures join together for one last roll in the waves, it is a thing of joy, of beauty... of love. I am glad that someone had the wherewithal and gumption to gather the 500 or so dollars needed to make this movie. It makes the world a better place knowing that you do not need creativity, talent, acting, good special effects or any sort of film-making ability whatsoever to make a movie.
