Review of Meet the Parents (2000) by Sean H — 02 Feb 2014
A comedy hit when it was released in 2000, "Meet the Parents" is a remake of a little-known independent film of the same name written by stand-up comic Emo Phillps. (The original was also filmed in my neighborhood growing up, so I have a soft spot for it.
) In the 2000 version, all the pieces are there for a good comedy: the acting is great and the jokes are good on paper. (There is one short scene involving a breast pump that made me giggle like a schoolgirl.
) The problem is that all the jokes are at the expense of poor Gaylord Focker, a guy who just wants to make his future in-laws happy. It is, at times, a painful experience, but better than most comedies of its time.
