Review of Meet the Parents (2000) by Guy G — 09 Jul 2011
[85/B+] This is a fairly hilarious situation comedy that isn't afraid to traipse into minorly tasteless and wince-worthy jokes, but is carried along by a universalistic current and a relatable main character stuck in the trying circumstance of visiting his girlfriend's upscale, suburban WASP parents in their alienating milieu.
It's all about manners and expectations, and social anxiety, with some of the viewers' worst fears of humiliation, inadequacy, and pure bad luck in an uncomfortable setting providing the fulcrum for the laughs. Very competently delivered and staged. Sometimes teetering on the brink of television sit-com whimsicality, and perhaps too self-conscious for some people, but really very genuinely amusing.
