Review of Meet the Mormons (2014) by Joseph M — 11 Oct 2014
Would I pay to see an infomercial that was over an hour long? I would if the proceeds were all going to charity (They are and I did). It would appear that the reviewers know a lot more about the LDS faith and its doctrine than the average guy on the street, their chief objection being that it lacks substance, doctrinal discourse or even historic reference.
Perhaps they missed the title of the film, Meet the Mormons not Mormonism 101. Evidently some of them slept through the introduction as well. "Mormons" is universally understood to refer to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
What is not universally understood is that "Mormon Church" is a misnomer, an organization that does not exist. And while the film may pack few surprises for anyone somewhat familiar with members of the church (Mormons) it does address many of the stereotypes that persist to this day.
Stereotypes I have encountered many, many times. It does lack intimate detail but that is the price paid for covering six different stories. If you would like to see past the (mostly) negative stereotypes of Mormons as portrayed in the media, meet some truly interesting people and chip in a scheckel or two for charity - The American Red Cross - then I highly recommend Meet the Mormons.
If you are really all that curious about LDS doctrine I could recommend a couple of good books or introduce you to a couple of nice young people with black name tags who would love to have a chance to talk to you.
