Review of Meet the Mormons (2014) by Trevor C — 12 Oct 2014
Meet the Mormons is not a film for those interested in learning about Mormonism. Rather, it is a publicity stunt done to show that Mormons come in all "colors, shapes, and sizes". None of the controversial topics of the LDS church are talked about in the movie, such as temple garments, and polygamy was only very briefly mentioned in the beginning.
The movie states that common conceptions of gender roles in the church are false, and are challenged by the movie, however, there is only one standout example, and it is of roles of genders in the home, not the church.
The fact that only men can hold the priesthood is not mentioned, nor is the fact that even when women hold offices in the church they are generally presided over by a male authority. All in all, it was better than I expected, but not a good look at Mormonism, rather it was a look at the lives of Mormons, and not how their religion affected their lives.
The movie is meant to tug at the heartstrings, and to make one emotional. The stories of the families/individuals do not go into depth about their religion and how it mingles with their personal/professional lives.
Those interested in the LDS faith, do not see this movie for 10 dollars and up in a movie theater; rather, talk to a local LDS leader, or a friend. This film does not have any depth as to how it portrays even the simplest aspects of the LDS faith.
If you want to watch this film, rent it, or wait for when it is inevitably put on Netflix as most B-movies/documentaries are.
