Review of Meet the Feebles (1989) by Alan L — 10 Feb 2008
Um, yeah, I loved the Muppet show. Of course I was about three at the time and so my real muppet introduction wasn't Sesame street or the show, but the Muppet babies cartoon show. This is severe violation of Jim Henson's work.
The aussie camerawork leaves somewhat to be desired (Was this shot with an old VHS camcorder?), puppets getting massacred doesn't necessarily rise above the level of sophomoric, shitastic puppet work (checkout the Sodomy song, where in the whole dance the fox puppet lifts a single leg), but the bad attitude occasionally and tremendously rises above the predictable.
Perhaps I hadn't seen "The Deer Hunter" at the time, but this ruined that film for me. Peter Jackson did step upon some pretty severe cultural taboos, and it's doubtful Avenue Q was willing to go such distance in offending special interest groups.
Closest antecedent is "Drawn Together", which seems to have carefully studied this offensiveness levels. There's a certain channeling of "I Spit on Your Grave" in the the Hippo's plight, no jury would bother to convict her.
