Review of Meet the Feebles (1989) by Jesse W — 08 Apr 2008
Freakin' weird. Peter Jackson has always been a master of low budget film making used to the greatest effect. His hands are all over the production including special effects. From Bad Taste to even Lord of the Rings, you can tell those films are made by him.
The cast is all animal puppets, and every deranged thing you can imagine them doing happens. Flys hang out in toilet bowls eating shit, reptiles tell "Deer Hunter" influenced war stories, furry animals vomit and piss, pigs engage in BDSM, Hippos spray down others with machine guns, foxes sing about sodomy, walrus's(?) have sex with cats.
It's an incredibly obnoxious and silly film, but because of how strange it all is it isn't as funny as it should be. It is more like a weird dream you've had that you don't quite know how to comprehend.
The creative integrity and spirit of the film as admirable and even some of the lines, when you can understand them, are really funny. My favorite is "Shit, I was just about to pop my cookies!" or hearing rabbits in Saigon discussing socialist theory.
