Review of Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) by Joe L — 10 Feb 2009
A charming film that is constructed like an ornately frosted, multi-tiered cake. it's a family drama with a small 'd,' focusing on how a minor conflict shakes up otherwise unflappably bouyant, musical girls.
the photography is stunning and judy garland's performance is earnestness amplified to the highest levels achievable. while it's sugary sweet, it never quite goes over the top. the children turn in especially fine performances, and the musical numbers are woven seamlessly into the storytelling.
the tone and style reminded me of the opening scenes of 'gone with the wind,' if scarlet had been likable, and untouched by war.
