Review of Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) by Jackson C — 19 Oct 2012
Who'd a thought Judy Garland singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" would make Margaret O'Brien hysterically break down in tears and destroy snowmen? No one. Vincente Minnelli directs Judy Garland (his future wife) as teen-aged Esther Smith, one of her greatest performances (though not her best, that feat belongs to The Wizard Of Oz) and a dramatic performance by "Tootie" (Margaret O'Brian), Meet Me In St.
Louis is sweet, wonderfully scored and has many of MGM's stars take on huge and minor roles. Mary Astor, Lucille Bremer, Leon Ames, Tom Drake, Marjorie Main, Harry Davenport, Joan Carroll, Chill Wills and June Lockhart are just a few of these names.
A highly recommended film.
