Review of Meet John Doe (1941) by Ken S — 11 Mar 2015
A female reporter is let go from the paper she works for after a shrewd businessman buys it up. To save her job she creates a fictional man called John Doe in her column, he rails against society and threatens to commit suicide on Christmas Eve.
It sparks public interest, and she ghost writes more letters and hires a drifter to portray the man, this leads to a movement of people across the country trying to be kind to one another...but will the shrewd Business people take advantage of so many coming together with a common cause? It is a classic Capra kind of tale, he was always at his best when he used the Underdog Everyman vs.
Business/Corrupt Politicians...and though his films always have a sort of "gee whiz" quality, the darker themes are often overlooked...this films climax is about a man who may commit suicide.
