Review of Meet Dave (2008) by Regi S — 21 Sep 2009
The script is about as atrocious as you'd expect...crappy sci-fi plot that has aliens inexpilcably searching for a round...badly weaved in with romantic comedy and boosting the self esteem of the awkward 10 year old boy who needs a friend. It's cliché Hollywood garbage. Somehow, Dave also has an A-list cast including a dozen.
Or so well-known funny people you will recognize. The best moments, which save it from being totally without merit, find Eddie Murphy doing the "alien trying to fit in" act to some comedic success...in the territory that "3rd Rock from the Sun" fleshed out...and physical comedy in the vein of Steve Martin in "All of Me." This flick could have been hysterical with more of that and less orb-chasing. The charming Elizabeth Banks (I heart her!) is wasted but the "Old Navy" scene had me laughing hard enough to make it worth watching.
