Review of Meet Dave (2008) by Sophie B — 12 Jan 2012

No idea why so many people dislike this movie. With box office ranking even worse. This is quite funny comedy, not the best of Eddie Murphy but definitely not so bad till intolerable. Movie start off with a boy Austyn Myers looking at his telescope when an orb smash into his bedroom and end up in the fish bowl.

His mum Elizabeth Banks (so beautiful) thought he is been imaginative. Then a human shape spaceship crash near Statue of Liberty. It's shape of Eddie Murphy, with little aliens controlling it inside.

Eddie is the captain. Ed Helms 2nd in command. Gabrielle Union is 3rd and Pat Kilbane is 4th. They are trying to behave normally like human. They are on Earth to use the orb to extract salt from sea as it is their source of power at home.

Crossing the road at red stop, Elizabeth knock him down. Eddie ankle is twisted and he walks to an alley, the mechanic emerge down and repair the leg. Austyn saw him and Elizabeth invite him up to apologize and ensure he is ok.

She offer him breakfast and give him ketchup, he drinks it. Thinking of a name, call himself Dave Ming-Chang. Her husband died 4 years ago. Eddie saw the photo of the boy and the orb and go to school to find him.

His white suit is way outdated and he go changed his clothes. Dispensing money from his butt. The principal thought he is a sub teacher and bring him to the class. A bully took the orb away from Austyn.

The boy bring Eddie to find the bully. At a shop, he stop 2 robbers easily. Austyn brings him home for dinner and said tomorrow they are celebrating Elizabeth's birthday. A policeman Scott Caan who love his job, attend to the crash site message and determine to go on, he cast the mold shape and got the face of Eddie.

Looking at the paintings of love done by Elizabeth, him and Gabrielle is trying to feel the love. When he leave after dinner and sleep with a vagabond on the street, that guy offer him his only blanket.

Eddie is puzzle why the man do so and don't understand human. Eddie and Gabrielle watched "It's A Wonderful Life" for reference. Next day celebrating Elizabeth birthday at the funfair, Eddie win a hot dog eating contest.

He win a plush toy and give it to Elizabeth and she is touched. He go to the toilet to unload and a constipated man say he is a show off. Her neighbor who seems to fancy her, warn Eddie not to ill-treat her.

He get the orb back from the bully and then play a baseball game which hit his own head causing blackout. He went to hospital and is recharge when doctor did the EMP on him. A cop saw him look familiar and alerted Scott.

The trio go to a cuban restaurant and celebrate. Eddie is dancing with her, with everyone else having own break. Ed is not happy Eddie is not doing his mission and plan a coup. Gabrielle with the help of Patrick (alter-ego is a sissy fashionista) dress sexy and seduce Eddie.

But he continues to dance with Elizabeth. Patrick took over the dance moves. Ed overthrow Eddie and is captain. Scott came and arrest Eddie to station. Ed goes crazy for mission and activated attack blast, bust out of station and going to sea, near Liberty.

Gabrielle think Ed is mad and save Eddie, both of them caught and "sneeze" out of the ship. The duo make their way back and he express love for Gabrielle. Scott found one drunk alien fallen into a cup of coffee and he leads Scott to find Eddie.

Eddie and Gabrielle control back the ship and the orb fell into the sea. Only enough energy left to stop orb or return home. Eddie choose the former and everyone approve. Scott and partner arrive. Austyn use the taser and power up the ship.

Eddie came out to thank the boy and Elizabeth for he knows love now. Scott put back the alien. When they fly off, FBI net it down. But they left in the shoe ship. Happy ending for alien and human.
