Review of Meet Dave (2008) by Emma R — 31 Jan 2012
I remember watching this when it first came out and liking it a lot, to my surprise. Now that I've watched it again, I hold a different opinion.
Though I stand by my previous statement that this film presents pretty good morals, I think that most of the film felt forced. A lot of the humour was slapstick; and there was some rather distasteful, unnecessary toilet humour. The screenplay was one to be laughed at because it was ridiculous. Yes, this was funny most of the time, but only because of how ridiculous it was. I, personally, think that no one is going to remember this Eddie Murphy performance; Elizabeth Banks felt out of place; Ed Helms just wasn't doing it for me; and Pat Kilbane's character just didn't need to be like that. I was somehow blinded to all of this during first viewing. I remember thinking that this was heartwarming and being very surprised that I liked it.
Upon second viewing I feel the negatives outweigh the positives here. Go ahead and give it a shot, but I'm not promising anything here.
