Review of Meek's Cutoff (2011) by Eric K — 11 Mar 2011
Bloody slow and freakin' meditative is a major understatement but I love this kind of thing and Kelly Reichardt rocks my world with her subtle style. So subtle and played down that at times it's easy to forget what's driving it all forward but this film is a test of endurance, even for its modest length.
The way it focuses on the doers (the women) and not the decision makers (the men) isn't the most original of ideas on paper but it's brilliantly done and Reichardts slight touch and room to breath draws out some great performances from the female cast.
Reichardt is fast becoming one of my favourite directors working today.
