Review of Meek's Cutoff (2011) by Alan W — 18 Apr 2011
Please don't see this film under any circumstances. It made me ache all over. Here is the plot in a nutshell: times is hard on the Oregon Trail, people wear bonnets, look for water and hold their feelings in a lot.
Then in the end...ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENS! I really wish they'd just made one moody, atmospheric still image, telling us everything the writer and director wanted us to think about the women and their subservient roles, the men and their flacid responses to a terrible dilemma (of their own making) and the various views presented about an enigmatic Native American.
It could even have a caption if she liked, something like 'Have our attitudes changed all that much?' or something equally preachy but, for the love of all things good, why oh why did it have to take two hours of my life?
