Review of Meek's Cutoff (2011) by John P — 24 Sep 2011
A very contemplative film with very few chosen dialogues and powerful imagery. It's an experience into which we plunged because of the director's talent. This elegiac evocation of the settlement of the West by a very small caravan of pioneers who get lost and encounter a Native American who embodies the mysterious and barbarian figure of The Other is really thought-provoking.
It's a film, ultimately, about what it means to be humans and to recognize a fellow human being despite the barrier of the otherness. The ending, though at first frustrating, is in fact really well-thought because it enables us to stay focused on the main theme and to stay with our pondering: what does it mean to be human and how do we see our own humanity in others?
