Review of Meek's Cutoff (2011) by Randy T — 14 Apr 2012
The old cliche says "as boring as paint drying on the wall" and here is the film that makes that cliche relevant. Oh, this is critically praised as being "one of the best of the year" and so forth.
Don't buy the hype. This film is awful. A group of settlers wander down the Oregon Trail in 1845 and use Stephen Meek to guide them over the cascades. The cascades don't even make much of an appearance.
The most thrilling scene of the film is the group lowering their covered wagons down a mere hill- perhaps a little gully. The rest of the film features long, lingering shots of high desert. Critics can read in what they want, this does not make a good movie.
