Review of Medicine for Melancholy (2009) by Samantha L — 16 Jul 2010
When I saw the trailer for this film, I was shocked to see that there was a mumblecore flick with black people in it! I mean, I've seen at least one with a black co-star, but never one where it stars two black people! I had to see it.
I did and it was pretty great.
My favorite aspect is the coloring and the way it seems to represent the emotions of the lead characters. In the beginning, the film is pretty much black and white with slight coloring on their shirts. As the movie goes on, color fills the screen in very key moments. It's very interesting.
The movie provides a perspective I wouldn't have understood without a film like this. Sure, I get that gentrification is a bad thing, but to see the concept from the view of these characters...it's fascinating.
I recommend this film if you like quiet, independent movies.
