Review of Meatballs (1979) by Jordan T — 10 May 2008
This was one of my favorite movies as a grade-schooler. Watching it again, I feel like it does a better job capturing the nostalgia of summer camp than it does making you laugh. It's shmaltzy as hell, and the gags are silly at best and just plain lame at worst, but it really does have a heart, which is more than you can say for most teen flicks you see these days.
A very odd tone, though: half of it is G-rated "kids coming of age" fare, and half is PG-13 raunch. Makes me actually miss the '70s a bit.
