Review of Meatballs (1979) by Mike G-Man G — 08 Aug 2008
"Animal House" for the juvenile set (the script was co-written by one of that films scribes, Harold Ramis) and set in a Summer camp instead of a college campus, "Meatballs" is perfect non-think entertainment for the kid in all of us.
However, it must be said that the film wouldn't provide even a fraction of the fun it does if not for Bill Murray's riotous star turn as Tripper, the head counselor. He takes the rather mundane script and transforms it, providing consistent amusement with his good-natured clowning and one-liners.
It's the role that catapulted him to stardom and he would work with director Ivan Reitman (another "Animal House" vet...he produced) in the even more successful "Stripes" and "Ghostbusters.
" A great deal more entertaining than we had any right to expect, mostly thanks to Murray. A word of caution: Avoid at all costs the in-name-only sequels, which ARE horrid!
