Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Carlos R — 16 Sep 2010
It's definitely not as perfect and sophisticated as Scorsese's next works, but this one he made when he was only 30 years old, is really a proof of great filmmaking, a really powerful crime film, with really great acting, specially De Niro in a Godfather-2 previous role and also Harvey Keitel.
This film is weird a little, because it really doesn't have an established plot, it's just about a guy who owes money to everybody, and his cousin who tries to help him while he has a secret relationship with his cousin's cousin.
It's above all a film about and only about characters, the plot doesn't even matter, it shows the internal relations in a dark and terrible crime world, very violent and hard for everybody. A great film by Scorsese, simply not as good as Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, for example.
