Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Brian R — 21 Jun 2012
Mean Streets is to be the better half of Scorsese's 69 film which continues with Keitel this time a loan shark workin for the mafia. Charlie(Keitel) is a Catholic so I guess thats why he doubts a lot about the choices he has to make and then Johnny boy who is a machismo, ruthless, tempered man who disrespects those that wanna cross him. Scorsese definetly knows how to show cool visuals of Lil' Italy, the music, the bars, the street culture, and the vivid colour of red(guilt). My fav character in the film isnt Keitel or DeNiro it is Michael played by Richard Romanus who imo sets a death date if money isnt pay as honored. The best scene is the pool hall fight, the gang bribes the cops and then get into another brawl. Brilliant.
Flaws: tends to be slow at times, sort of dated, can be confusing to watch at first, no real twist in the plot.
