Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Jim F — 07 Jan 2013
The tone of this felt more like Saturday Night Fever, than Goodfellas. Although it could pass as a premliminary sketch for Goodfellas. The old Scorsese dialogue is there, although it could do with a bit of polishing up.
Watching this movie is a bit like driving a car that has no seatbelts. Maybe a gem of a classic car. not a smooth ride, but a bumpy one where you feel every pothole. This was made in the good old days before political correctness.
It's skinheads and DM's not the Spice Girls. You can smoke in pubs. It isn't a classic, but it's a piece of practice work before Scorsese reeled off a multitude of classics.
