Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Trevor L — 02 Feb 2009
Gangsters and New York are Martin Scorsese's bread and butter. So then how has this early film gone unnoticed? It is a shame, but now is the time to see this for yourself. Harvey Keitel is wonderful as Charlie, a small time gangster trying to make something of himself yet at the same time struggle with the world around him.
Robert De Niro is explosive as Johnny Boy, Charlie's buddy with a big mouth, debts to pay and a hot temper. The story line is either hit or miss, you'll either be disinterested with another crime drama about the inner works of mob life or you'll be hooked on how Scorsese sets up a world where Charlie and his friends are just trying to make a day's living the only way they know how.
