Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Matthias S — 26 Feb 2009
Beautiful for it's flaws. This is a film of an artist coming of age. Not as polished as Raging Bull or some of his later work like The Departed and Casino, but a perfect reflection of the man Martin Scorsese.
It begins with the voice over by Scorsese and introduced the world to the talent of Robert De Niro. As with all Marty's movies the soundtrack is amazing and it is more obvious in this film than in any of the others that the soundtrack provides the beating heart of the film.
As close as we'll ever get to the greatest American filmmaker of all time.
