Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Jeff B — 23 Mar 2011
An amazing character piece with lots to tell about how Scorsese's films would develop, both thematically and stylistically, in the future. De Niro plays a real dick of a character here, but the film mostly focuses on Harvey Keitel's fish-out-of-water "nice guy" in this tough Italian neighborhood at the very end of the Vietnam War era.
Accordingly, we are treated to some social commentary, but mostly just a nice look at the life and times of Keitel's character, Charlie, as he struggles to do the right thing in any given instance.
