Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Subhendu S — 13 Sep 2013
Before Martin Scorsese would go on to craft "Goodfellas" and "The Departed", he made Mean Streets. This is a fine gangster film and a terrific addition to the genre. The cast here is composed of excellent performances by both a young Robert Deniro and Harvey Keitel.
One thing I have always loved about Scorsese's films is his ability to tell a raw story. This is no different with Mean Streets. Everything that Scorsese would later become known for is present here such as realistic dialouge, raw atmosphere, excellent pacing, etc.
Martin Scorsese has long mastered the gangster genre and he definately proves that with this film. The cast here is phenomonal as Robert Deniro and Harvey Keitel give some of the best performances of their careers.
Mean Streets is an overlooked gem that doesn't seem to get it's share of praise due to Scorsese's later films in his career. Long after he's gone, Scorsese will most likely be remember for "Goodfellas" and "Taxi Driver", however, I personally feel that Mean Streets belongs in the caregory as one of his best films.
If your're a fan of the gangster genre, there is absolutely no reason for you not to check this out.
