Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Travis J — 16 Jan 2014
Mean Streets may feel too rough or basic to keep many modern audiences as captivated as a film like Goodfellas still can, but it does have a distinct charm that easily makes it still a classic. I rarely find myself yearning to watch a film more than once - I usually need a year or two to pass before I feel like I want to watch it again - but Mean Streets was one of those rare films that I wanted to watch again after waiting just one week.
Every single actor in this film feels near perfect for their role, and the characters are both believable and yet incredibly entertaining. The plot is just about.. well... What life is like for these characters.
It succeeds in exploring the interactions of it's brilliant characters, more than it does in any clear overarching story, but in this type of film I don't mind that whatsoever. This is basically the beginning of the Scorsese gangster classics, so if you haven't seen it yet - do it already.
