Review of Mean Girls (2004) by Randy G — 06 Nov 2014
I don't quite get the hype. Maybe this is because I have a Y chromosome. It does make one sad for Lindsay Lohan, who had a flourishing career and excellent features, before attaching herself to the likes of Paris Hilton and getting unnecessary plastic surgery. This movies is about the hive mentality among high school girls, the imperative to please those who a smart, self-respecting person should feel no need to please. Sadly, Lohan's real life directly countered the message of her most beloved film.
Mean Girls, to me, is light and fluffy, lacking much of a satirical edge. Tina Fey is an astonishing comedy writer, and while this script isn't bad, it is far from her best work. Lizzy Caplan is memorable as the pretty goth girl, and Tim Meadows is welcome to show up in any comedy as far as I'm concerned. This is a movie which many girls of my generation look at as a classic. I don't want to take that away from them, but I don't see it.
