Review of Mean Creek (2004) by Addison B — 09 Oct 2007
I'm not going to lie. There were two reasons and two reasons alone that I wanted to see this movie.
#1 because I saw the trailer for it before "The Machinist" DVD with Christian Bale...it peaked my interest.
#2 Honestly, this is the main reason, because it has Josh Peck in it, A.K.A. the fat kid from the nickelodeon show "Drake and Josh" which I secretly love.
Those points aside, this movie is very different from most mainstream films.
Its very dark, and very disturbing.
Josh Peck's character is a bit of an asshole. He's the school bully, and he beats up Rory Culkin's character. In order to try and get their revenge, Rory and his brother/brother's friends decide to invite him to a camping trip and try to leave him in the woods.
Then Rory begins to realize Josh isn't a bad guy. He has no friends, and is only mean because he doesn't fit in.
Josh ends up dying.
Take a second to take that in.
This movie is upsetting, there are scenes that will chill you to the bone.
Watch it. Indie films deserve their due. Sit down, and enjoy.
You'll be glad you did.
