Review of Mean Creek (2004) by Lucas F — 07 Oct 2008
Watching films like Mean Creek makes me wonder why they never manage to produce anything even close to this kind of quality in Finland: lack of budget is usually quoted as the reason, but as Mean Creek demonstrates, you just need a few good actors, a decent story and a director with an eye for detail to make a film on a shoestring.
Mean Creek delivers because it manages to sidestep many cliches and actually make its characters seem like real people and by keeping the shades of gray on the foreground instead of the good ole black'n white.
Ok, there are the pre-teens spouting profound mature dialogue musings here too, but still it is a highly recommended film. And surprisingly deep, given it's 85-minute runtime. Great!
