A somber, gripping piece about youth, revenge and morality. While the movie could have easily devolved into a simplistic mess in lesser hands, the filmmakers have successfully crafted a bleak emotional landscape infused with surprising nuance.

In a movie that explores the relationship between perpetrator and victim, the characters are never overtly vilified nor aggrandized, but are made to be seen through an empathetic and honest eye - as flawed human beings.

In doing so, an appropriate distance is maintained that gives the audience room to draw their own conclusions. But perhaps most importantly, the movie is carried by heartfelt and believable performances from the spot-on cast, which is all the more impressive considering their young age.

"Mean Creek" deserves to be seen and felt.
