Review of Me Before You (2016) by Persis F — 08 Dec 2016
I have always been averse to films inspired/based from books. Although the books-turned-films like Sense and Sensibility, Life of Pi, and Lovely Bones did qualify to the idea that it can be done, I always digress whenever the topic arose.
Me Before You, however, didn't. Yes, the characters fit the personalities (and looks?) of the book's, but that just proves the point that aesthetic value (seems to be the priority of the film or any other film) doesn't happen in literature - which could definitely work to magnetize young readers to get on reading, but only in mainstream media.
The book showed me that there are different ways to live even though you are a quadriplegic. But after watching the movie, it felt like it's shoving into your mind the idea that you have to accept this form of death (assisted suicide) when the book says otherwise (or so I thought).
Or maybe the aim of the story is to romanticize suicide? But then again, it'll overthrow one of the most memorable lines of the main character, William Traynor, when he said, "You only get one life.
It's actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.".
