Review of Me and Orson Welles (2008) by Jk F — 06 Dec 2009
Much, much more than a typical coming of age story, this film manages to layer several different themes on top of that basic trope; the nature of genius, artistic temperament & passion and the price of ambition just to name a few.
The cast are all absolutely outstanding throughout - no-one is more shocked than I am that Zac Efron can actually act, let alone stand up to a stunning star-making turn from Christian McKay (who's he?) and Claire Danes at absolutely the top of her considerable game.
It is however more than a little unfair to pick out these few names as despite it not actually being an ensemble piece, the movie certainly felt like one with superb turns in even relatively minor roles.
Although superficially the film may have appeared to be director-for-hire work from Linklater, the engrossing characterisations and sheer immediacy mark it out from similar such movies and make it an easy recommendation.
