Review of Me and Orson Welles (2008) by Marcel D — 19 Oct 2010
Before we begin, I love Orson Welles. He's awesome.
Me and Orson Welles places a fictional character in a real piece of theatrical history, the staging of Orson Welles' Caesar at The Mercury. The production that reinvigorated Shakespeare and helped to catapault Welles to stardom.
Through the eyes of a surprisingly bearable Zach Efron, we get to see all the bizarre workings of Welles around the theatre. How these characters are part of history but wouldn't know it because rehearsing a production by Orson is torture.
Orson Welles is a huge character and McKay plays him so well. Having studied the man and his time at The Mercury, I found the film that much more interesting because it delivered on so many little details.
A fantastic film for fans of theatre- and especially Welles.
Also check out- The Cradle Will Rock for more Welles time in theatre. They'd work well back to back.
