Review of Me and Orson Welles (2008) by Mh P — 19 Mar 2011
A wonderful film with a splendid cast, especially Christian McKay whose performance as Welles is uncanny, down to the most minute gestures. The sets, costumes, music and cinematography transcend time and space to transport the audience into 1937 New York.
This narrative tale is told through the eyes of young Richard Samuels, played by Zac Efron, who existentially lands a bit part as Lucius in the upcoming first production of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre.
The narrative weaves its story through the emotions, trials and tribulations of Welles' creative force to produce the play, on which the hopes and dreams of all involved are invested. Young Richard is smitten by Sonja Jones, wonderfully played by the beautiful Claire Danes.
The film is superbly directed by Richard Linklater. A fabulous backstage story about the theater that gives us a vibrant look into the many facets of the iconic Orson Welles.
