Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Josh K — 19 Sep 2015
Well... That's another name to add to the list of films that have made me cry (I am literally still sobbing). Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is THE definition of charming. This rite of passage/coming of age/black comedy is a well crafted, tightly scripted and imaginatively directed film that doesn't pull its punches.
The silly yet witty humour balances perfectly with the weight of its subject matter. This balance never falters and is maintained while never coming across as jarring as the blend of tone flows seamlessly into one another.
The clever camerawork, quirky production design and stop motion asides make Me and Earl one of the most unique looking films of the year and is just a marvel to watch unfold on screen. When it comes to the performances, each of the film's three main leads is remarkable and could easily carry any studio/indie film on their own so it is a treat to see such young talent come together and create a real tour-de-force vision of companionship.
Not only is the film funny, but its insights into life of outsiders in high school, friendship and bereavement are not just original but linger in your conscious and challenge you to actually think. I'd recommend this flick to ANYONE who has a beating heart in their chest and who wants to experience what a film should make you experience; laughter, tears and lessons.
... P.s. Watch out for a great voice cameo that serves as the cherry on top to an already hilariously brilliant film.
