Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Peter F — 28 Apr 2015
This year's Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner is a thoughtful and occasionally transgressive adaptation of a popular YA novel. The film handles its material involving a terminally ill teen better than last year's The Fault in our Stars, and also employs plenty of clever film techniques.
Alfonso Gomex-Rejon isn't as adept a filmmaker as the plethora of artists this film references (such as Werner Herzog and Jean-Luc Godard), but he is able to apply an art house craft to a film that is accessible, fun, and bitter-sweet.
It's tonal shifts from glib to sentimental aren't always seamless, but Me & Earl & the Dying Girl is likely to be one of the year's most well-liked indie pictures.
