Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Christopher C — 18 May 2015
Once a year a film comes along that, although it is not going to be a huge action blockbuster making a billion dollars, does in fact show that good movies can still be made. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is that film for 2015.
Greg wants to get through high school being generally unnoticed by his classmates. He works hard to not be part of any one clique and to be accepted if not actually liked by everyone. His best friend is Earl with whom he shares a love of film and together they make parody's of some of the great works of cinema.
Enter Rachel, a classmate that Greg hasn't really had anything to do with since early childhood. She has been diagnosed with stage 4 luekemia and Greg's mother has badgered him into spending time with her. What follows as this forced interaction proceeds to friendship is both funny and touching.
It is rare that a film can have you laughing so hard you can't breathe and then tearing up in a matter of seconds but director Gomez-Rejon has put together a stellar cast of young and upcoming actors along with some quirkey comedic standouts in supporting rolls that do just that.
This film is a small but perfect gem among the giant blockbusters of the summer season and one that is definitely worth your time to search out. The film will be released on June 12th.
