Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by James T — 12 Jun 2015
Very disappointed. Had looked forward to this film for quite awhile. In the end it is just a mess that isn't quite sure what it wants to be. It's attempt to be quirky fails on its own pat-itself-on-the-back approach. All in all it is far from being as smart as it wants to be and void of much emotion. There are a few good moments but they are not enough to pull this pretentious story from much better attempts already done in the past.
I have to agree with the NEW YORK MAGAZINE review: "Nearly every drop of human experience in it is mediated by movies, not in some Godardian assault on false Hollywood narratives but to flatter an audience too self-consciously hip to swallow this story straight.".
