Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Tatiana G — 01 Jul 2015
The actors and acting were great, but this movie lacked any real plot and emotional connections. Without spoiling too much, nothing much happens in the way of love, friendship, coming of age or character growth.
Also, we know nothing about anyone except, ironically, Early who is barely featured. How am I expected to feel for characters I know nothing about? Although the ending was meant to be hopeful, I found it invalidated everything that came prior; am I supposed to believe he even cared about her knowing that little about her? On top of it all, Gomez-Rejon does so many attention-grabbing extras with the cinematography it is truly difficult to watch.
A disappointing film that left me bored and unlikely to watch another of his unless he gives the characters more room and restrains his own unnecessary artsyness.
